    COLONIAL LABOR AND SLAVERY
The early historiography of slavery sought to understand the causal relationship between racism and slavery. Did seventeenth-century Englishmen choose to enslave Africans because they were already racially prejudiced? Or was the turn to slave labor primarily an economic decision, with prejudice toward that degraded status developing later? Edmund Morgan, Tim Breen, and Stephen Innes do not put the question so neatly, leaving much to consider about the nature and development of unfree labor.

    ANTEBELLUM SLAVERY
How did slavery effect the development of families and culture in the antebellum south? Were slaves completely reduced to victims' status? How do we know? Herbert Gutman and Deborah Gray White both look inside the culture of slavery and use Marxist and gender analysis to understand the unique development of an African American culture in the south.

    RECONSTRUCTION
The process of reconstructing the nation after the Civil War had profound effects on the American political system and American culture. Here we consider the competing goals and expectations of southern whites and blacks, and northern/western whites, paying special attention to the political and economic process of Reconstruction.
